Op-ed

This was an op-ed I wrote.

The newest Mortal Kombat game which is coming out this April got banned in Australia. This isn’t the first time a game has got banned from being released in Australia.

Mortal Kombat got banned from Australia because of it showed bones being broken and projectile vomit. It got banned because of this because the people who rate the games in Australia decided that this was too mature for 15 year olds which is there highest rating in Australia. They do not have games that are mature rated like we do in Canada where the rating goes from E for everyone to M for mature.

That is so stupid. They are saying that the adults in Australia get there freedom to buy the games they want just because they don’t have a rating for it so it instantly gets banned.

Not only does it take freedom away from Australians who could buy M rated games if they would have them in Australia it also takes away freedom of speech from the people who worked hard on the game.

Games are an art form and from taking away a single game they are taking away freedom of speech. Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said: "We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat, one of the worlds oldest and most successful video games franchises, will not be available to mature Australian gamers."

CEO of the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, Ron Curry released a statement today condemning the decision to ban Mortal Kombat.

"The granting of another RC to a video game clearly designed and targeted at ADULTS again highlights the shortcomings of the current classification scheme. In particular, the absence of an adult classification," said Curry.

Other games have also been refused classification like Fallout 3. The developers have gone back to the game and changed content in those games so they could be released. That’s the same as asking Leonardo DaVinci to go back and change the Mona Lisa because a country didn’t like her smile.

Why doesn’t Australia get with the program already? They should just revise there classification and give the games an M rating. Do they think that people can’t handle a little bit of mature content.

The people in Australia deserve to play the games they want. I am outraged over the fact that the people in Australia believe that video games are just for kids. Video games are for every age and they should trust there people more and not take away there freedom. God forbid this ever happen here in Canada.
